Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reluctant to rest Bukayo Saka despite the club’s looming Champions League semifinal clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
Following their emphatic 5–1 aggregate victory over reigning champions Real Madrid in the quarterfinals, Arsenal are now being seen as strong contenders to win Europe’s most prestigious club competition for the first time in their history.
However, while the Gunners have thrived in Europe, their domestic campaign has faltered. Arteta’s side trails Premier League leaders Liverpool by 13 points with only five matches remaining. Liverpool could secure the title as early as Wednesday, should Arsenal suffer defeat against Crystal Palace.
Despite their diminishing hopes in the league, Arteta appears unwilling to rest Saka, who has recently returned from a three-month injury layoff. The England international has made 25 goal contributions in 30 appearances across all competitions this season and was instrumental in the recent wins over Real Madrid and Ipswich Town.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Arteta emphasized the importance of maintaining rhythm and form among his key players.
“We cannot think in those terms,” Arteta stated when asked about the possibility of rotating Saka. “When the players are fit, available, and eager to play, they must play. They perform at their highest level when they have consistency, both physically and emotionally, and when they are in rhythm.”
He continued, “If a player is not in the right condition to perform, we will not risk them. But if they are ready, then we have no reason not to play them.”
Saka was on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from Leif Davis during Arsenal’s 4–0 victory at Ipswich Town, which resulted in Davis receiving a red card. Nevertheless, Arteta played down concerns regarding Saka’s fitness ahead of the Palace match.
“We have to wait and see how he responds after the training session, but it’s nothing too serious,” he said. “If we choose to select him, I believe there’s a strong chance he will be available to play tomorrow.”
In contrast, Arteta delivered a less optimistic update on midfielder Jorginho, who sustained a suspected rib injury during Arsenal’s recent draw with Brentford.
“I think Jorginho will be out for a few weeks,” Arteta confirmed. “I hope he can return before the end of the season, but at this stage, I cannot be certain. We will monitor his progress over the coming days.”
