The Egypt international highlighted James’s blend of strength and tactical discipline as especially difficult to overcome, even compared with top defenders such as Virgil van Dijk, William Saliba, and Marc Guehi.

“Until now, it was Reece James,” said Marmoush, when asked about his toughest Premier League opponent.

“It was my first Premier League game. He’s fast, strong, and has quality on the ball. He gave me a tough time.

“I haven’t played much in the Premier League yet, but I’ll say James for now.”

Marmoush, 26, joined City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January for around 65 million GBP and has quickly become a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Known for his electric pace and trickery, he has contributed seven goals and three assists in 19 Premier League appearances, often unsettling defenders with his direct style.

His arrival, however, coincided with a difficult spell for Manchester City. The club finished the 2024/25 campaign without silverware, exiting early from both the Champions League and the Club World Cup before losing the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace – a match in which Marmoush saw a penalty saved at a decisive moment.

The new season has started in a similarly unsteady fashion, with Guardiola’s side losing two of their opening three league matches.

Still, Marmoush’s performances have been one of the few bright spots, offering hope that his attacking flair can help revive City’s campaign.
