Ruben Dias has committed his long-term future to Manchester City by signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2029.
The 28-year-old defender’s previous deal was set to expire in 2027, but his new agreement extends his stay by two more years, reflecting his importance to the team since arriving from Benfica in 2020 for 65 million pounds.
Since joining City, Dias has played a pivotal role in the club’s incredible success under Pep Guardiola. In his first season, he was named Premier League Player of the Season and the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, quickly establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the world. Over the past five years, he has helped the team win four consecutive Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup, and was instrumental in their historic treble in the 2022–23 season.
“I’m incredibly happy today,” Dias said.
“I love Manchester – it is my home now – and I love the Manchester City fans. Their support from day one has been unbelievable.
When I think about the trophies we’ve won and the way we’ve played our football, I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.
“City is where I want to be – at the top of the sport, competing for trophies. The club’s ambition matches mine perfectly.”
Dias also expressed gratitude to Pep Guardiola, director of football Hugo Viana, his teammates, and the club’s staff, pledging to continue giving his all to bring more success.
“This is such a special place. My job now is to be the best I can be for the duration of this contract and help us challenge for more silverware,” said Dias.
City’s director of football Hugo Viana praised Dias as “a leader on and off the pitch,” adding:
“His performances over the past five years have been outstanding, and he’s a big reason for our success. We’re thrilled he’ll be here for the long term.”
With Dias’ future secured, Manchester City are expected to focus next on contract talks with John Stones and Bernardo Silva, both of whom have just one year remaining on their current deals. Other players nearing the end of their contracts include Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson.
Meanwhile, defender Rico Lewis is reportedly close to agreeing a new five-year deal, while Rodri, Phil Foden, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake all have two years left on their contracts.
