Rio Ngumoha hopes for more game time under Liverpool manager Arne Slot and wants to seize every chance that comes his way after starring over the weekend.
The 17-year-old forward played his part in Sunday’s dramatic 1-0 Premier League win over Nottingham Forest, as Alexis Mac Allister struck a 97th-minute winner to secure all three points. Ngumoha’s energy and direct running stretched Forest late on, helping to turn the momentum in Liverpool’s favour.
It was his 15th senior appearance of the season, a significant milestone in what has already been a breakthrough campaign. Earlier in the term, Ngumoha became Liverpool’s youngest-ever scorer when he netted a stoppage-time winner against Newcastle United.
The teenager is clear about his mindset whenever he steps onto the pitch.
“I know I need to at least do something to try to impact the game, whether that’s on the ball or off the ball,” he said.
“That can be putting in a tackle, pressing to win the ball back, putting balls in the box, having shots on target or just beating my man.
“I just think every single time I’m called on for the team I want to show everyone what I can do really.
“Hopefully more game time soon, just keep pushing and gaining the manager’s trust and hopefully that leads to more minutes.”
Ngumoha arrived at Liverpool in September 2024 and made his senior debut 13 months ago under head coach Arne Slot. He credits Slot’s guidance as a key factor in his development.
“The manager is very important to me and he helps me a lot,” Ngumoha explained. “We might have a meeting after training and he tells me how well I am doing, to keep going, showing me clips. All of that is important and helpful.
“I am learning a lot every day playing and training with some of the best players in the world. I can’t ask for much more as a young kid.”
Liverpool return to action against West Ham United at Anfield on Saturday in the Premier League. The Reds have also secured qualification for the Champions League round of 16 after finishing third in the league phase. Friday’s draw will determine whether they face Atletico Madrid or Galatasaray, with the ties set for mid-March.
For Ngumoha, the focus is simple: keep working, keep learning, and be ready when called upon again.
