Manchester United have been handed a major boost as Lisandro Martinez has returned to full training following a long-term injury layoff.
The Argentina defender, who has been sidelined since February after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Crystal Palace, trained with the first team at Carrington this week. It marks a significant step in his recovery, with manager Ruben Amorim confirming that the 27-year-old is “progressing well.”
Martinez joined United from Ajax in the summer of 2022 and quickly became a fan favourite for his aggressive defensive style and leadership on the pitch.
Despite a series of injuries that have restricted his impact over the past two seasons, Amorim believes the centre-back remains a vital part of his plans.
“Lisandro has worked incredibly hard to come back, and the staff are very pleased with his progress,” Amorim has said. “He brings energy, organisation and a mentality that lifts the group.”
Martinez, who cost around £47 million, is seen as a natural fit for the left centre-back role in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation. His ability to play line-breaking passes from deep and his proactive defending make him one of the Premier League’s most composed ball-playing defenders.
Luke Shaw has filled that position for much of the current campaign, but Martinez’s return is expected to increase competition in the back line.
While it is considered too soon for the Argentine to feature against Forest on Saturday, he could make a short appearance when United face Tottenham Hotspur on November 8.
Amorim is likely to ease Martinez back gradually to prevent any setback, with the expectation that he will return to full match fitness after the upcoming international break.
Martinez’s comeback arrives at a crucial time for United, who are navigating a congested schedule across domestic and European competitions. His return could provide the defensive stability and leadership the team have missed in recent months.
