Lionel Messi became the highest-scoring player in FIFA World Cup history during Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria on Monday.
The Argentine captain scored both goals in a hard-fought win that secured Argentina’s place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with one group match still to play.
Messi’s first goal came from a low cross by Facundo Medina, which the 38-year-old finished first time to draw level with Brazilian icon Marta on 17 World Cup goals across the men’s and women’s tournaments. His second goal, scored in stoppage time, moved him clear on 18 and set a new all-time record.
Despite his historic achievement, Messi focused on the importance of the result rather than his personal milestone.
“I’m very happy with the win,” he said after the match. “It was a hugely important victory, a tough one, and one we worked hard for. It gives us calm for what’s coming.”
The evening was not perfect for the Argentina star, who missed a first-half penalty that could have given his side a more comfortable lead. However, Argentina remained in control and dealt well with an improved Austrian performance after the break.
“The truth is that the way it turned out today was spectacular,” Messi said. “I had the penalty that could have increased the lead, but I’m happy with the result and with the team’s work.”
Asked about breaking the World Cup scoring record and his memorable night, Messi responded with typical humility.
“I’m very tired,” he said.
The victory continued Messi’s impressive scoring streak, with the forward now finding the net in six consecutive World Cup matches. He has also scored five goals at the 2026 tournament so far.
Argentina have collected six points from their opening two Group J matches and have already secured a place in the last 32. Their final group game comes against Jordan on June 27 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
