Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol suffered a serious leg injury during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.
The Croatia international was forced off in the 51st minute, and his reaction as he left the pitch immediately raised concerns inside Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Manchester City later confirmed that Gvardiol had suffered a tibial fracture to his right leg. In a statement published on the club’s official website, City revealed the defender will undergo surgery this week and is expected to face a prolonged spell on the sidelines.
The injury occurred early in the second half against Chelsea, with City losing one of their most reliable performers in both defence and build-up play. Gvardiol has been a regular presence this season, valued for his composure on the ball, positional discipline and ability to step into midfield when required.
While the club has not placed a firm timeline on his return, reports suggest the injury could rule him out for several months, with the possibility that he may miss the remainder of the season.
Gvardiol has already spoken publicly about the setback. Writing on Instagram, he said: “This is a hard moment, but it will never define me. I will fight every day to return stronger.”
City’s defensive problems have been compounded by injuries to Ruben Dias and John Stones, prompting the club to recall academy defender Max Alleyne from his loan spell at Watford to provide cover.
Guardiola now faces immediate decisions ahead of Wednesday night’s Premier League clash with Brighton at the Etihad. Nathan Ake and Abdukodir Khusanov are among the players expected to shoulder greater responsibility as City look to maintain momentum despite losing a key figure.
Losing Gvardiol is a significant blow, but City must adapt quickly. As Guardiola has often stressed, the season does not wait, and his squad will now be tested without one of its most important defenders.
