Levy, who became chairman in December 2000 after purchasing a stake from Lord Alan Sugar, had been the Premier League’s longest-serving chairman.
Over his tenure, he oversaw the transformation of the club’s infrastructure, including the state-of-the-art training ground at Hotspur Way and the £1 billion Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, regarded as one of the most advanced in world football.
On the pitch, Spurs lifted the League Cup and Europa League earlier this year and famously reached the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino in 2019. However, Levy faced sustained criticism from sections of the fanbase for what many viewed as inconsistent investment in the playing squad, particularly during key transfer windows.
This summer, Spurs made sweeping managerial changes. Thomas Frank was appointed as the men’s head coach following the departure of Ange Postecoglou, while Martin Ho replaced Robert Vilahamn as manager of the women’s team.
The club also moved to strengthen its leadership structure, with former Arsenal executive Vinai Venkatesham taking over as CEO and Peter Charrington joining the board as non-executive chairman.
Reflecting on his decision to step down, Levy said:
“I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees. We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level. More than that, we have built a community. It hasn’t always been an easy journey, but significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.”
A club statement added: “This is all part of the club’s ambition to ensure that it is set up to deliver long-term sporting success. There are no changes to the ownership or shareholder structure of the club.”
Spurs are now preparing for a demanding campaign in both domestic and European competitions, with Frank tasked with delivering consistent top-four finishes and building on the Europa League triumph.
