Chelsea interim coach Calum McFarlane will be in charge for Wednesday night’s Premier League match away to Fulham.
Multiple reports and McFarlane’s own comments confirmed the Under-21s head coach would remain in interim charge as Chelsea delayed the official appointment of their next permanent head coach. The club’s stance is driven by a desire to avoid disruption following a steady performance at Manchester City and to finalise the wider managerial process.
McFarlane took charge for the 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, where Enzo Fernandez scored a stoppage-time equaliser to earn Chelsea a point. It was McFarlane’s first senior match in charge, and his calm handling of the occasion earned internal backing to continue for at least one more game.
After that match, McFarlane made it clear he was preparing as normal. “We’re training tomorrow,” he said. “So unless I’m told otherwise this evening, I’ll be taking that session. My sole focus has obviously been on this game. Until I’m told otherwise, I’ll lead the team.”
McFarlane was also scheduled to conduct Chelsea’s pre-match press conference ahead of the Fulham game, standard procedure for the coach expected to be in the dugout. All logistical planning and internal arrangements pointed to him leading the side at Craven Cottage.
Chelsea remain in talks with Liam Rosenior, currently head coach of RC Strasbourg, another club within the BlueCo ownership group. Rosenior travelled to London for discussions on Monday before returning to France, where he was expected to address the media in what is widely viewed as a farewell briefing on Tuesday. The club are keen to allow Rosenior to complete that process before confirming his move.
McFarlane praised the players’ response to a turbulent period. “Some of the players were shocked by the decision,” he said. “So the character they’ve shown in the last two days, and again today, shows what’s in the group. We know the character and the talent we’ve got.”
Chelsea face Fulham on Wednesday looking for only their second league win in nine matches. Barring any late changes, McFarlane’s interim spell is expected to end after the game, with Rosenior set to take charge for the FA Cup tie on Saturday at Charlton.
