The South Korean international has gritted his teeth through months of discomfort, proving his mettle for the league leaders.

During Bayern’s 3-0 rout of Mainz over the weekend, Kim was substituted at halftime as the pain became overwhelming.

In an interview with Korean broadcaster Leestar TV, the 28-year-old opened up about his struggle. “The Achilles issue is still there, but I’m biting down and pushing on,” he said. “Eyes closed, just getting through.”

Kim has been a linchpin for Bayern, starting 23 Bundesliga matches this season as they hold a eight-point lead atop the table with three games left, per the latest standings.

Despite his resilience, the center-back has faced criticism for occasional lapses, with some fans on X questioning his consistency. Kim, however, rejected any excuses. “Mistakes, injuries, or too many games, those are just cop-outs,” he said. “My job is to focus and deliver.”

Manager Vincent Kompany has carefully managed Kim’s workload, balancing rest with the demands of a packed schedule. A recent X post from Bayern’s official account after the Mainz win hailed Kim’s grit, stating, “Minjae’s heart and fight fuel our charge! #FCBM05.”

With Bayern on the cusp of the Bundesliga crown, needing just one win to secure it against RB Leipzig on May 3, Kim’s resolve remains crucial. The team also faces a pivotal Champions League showdown with Paris Saint-Germain on May 7. Kim’s ability to defy pain could define Bayern’s quest for glory on both fronts.
