The payout, part of FIFA’s Club Protection Programme, aims to offset the impact of Davies’ absence after he suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in a CONCACAF Nations League match against the United States in March 2025.
The exact amount of the compensation remains undisclosed, but reports suggest it could reach up to 7.5 million euros, based on the player’s salary.
The injury occurred during Canada’s 2-1 victory in the Nations League third-place play-off, where Davies, the team’s captain, was forced off after just 12 minutes.
Bayern have expressed frustration over the handling of the situation, alleging that Canada Soccer failed to adequately protect their player. A meeting in Munich between Bayern officials and Canadian Soccer Association representatives highlighted these concerns, with Bayern’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen stating, “The conduct and actions of the Canadian association did not entirely fulfil the duty to protect Davies.”
Dreesen has vowed to strengthen communication with national federations to ensure better care for Bayern’s players in the future. “We will intensify contact with the national associations of our contracted players to emphasise the need to fulfil protection obligations in the event of injury,” he said.
This stance reflects Bayern’s broader call for national teams to prioritise player welfare, especially as the club prepares for the FIFA Club World Cup, starting with a match against Auckland City on June 15.
Davies, who signed a contract extension with Bayern until 2030 in February 2025, faces a lengthy recovery. The 24-year-old is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024/25 season, including the upcoming Club World Cup. Teammate Harry Kane offered support, posting on Instagram, “We’re all behind you, Alphonso. No doubt you’ll come back stronger than ever.”
Recent posts on X from Bayern’s official account underscored their commitment to player safety, stating, “FC Bayern calls for more effective compliance with protection obligations by national associations following the injury of Alphonso Davies.” The club’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, also criticised Canada Soccer’s handling, saying, “It was sloppy. It is not professional, and we need to clear it up.”
With Davies sidelined, Bayern are turning to Raphael Guerreiro and Hiroki Ito to fill the left-back role, though both lack the dynamic flair Davies brings to the flank. The injury has sparked a broader debate about the balance between club and country, with Bayern determined to ensure such incidents don’t happen again.
