Sancho, 25, only arrived at Villa Park late in the transfer window but has already featured twice, playing 82 minutes in total as he builds fitness after a disrupted summer at Old Trafford.

The winger had trained away from United’s first team during pre-season and was seeking a fresh start after Chelsea pulled out of a permanent move in June, paying a five million pounds release penalty instead.

Despite interest from Serie A clubs, United were unable to secure a transfer that suited both sides, leaving Villa to move in with a late loan offer. Sancho’s future at Old Trafford looks increasingly bleak, with his contract due to expire next summer.

Although United hold a one-year extension option, it is not expected to be triggered as they look to cut his salary from the wage bill.

Emery has spoken of his belief in Sancho’s potential and hinted that the winger could even work his way back into the England squad if he finds consistent form in claret and blue.

“Yes, of course, this is my objective, to get him back to his best, and if he does that then he’ll come back to the national team,” Emery said earlier this month.

“Every player wants to be part of the national team. When he was at Borussia Dortmund, he performed fantastic. He played with the national team around 25 matches. He is still young, still hungry, and hopefully we can exploit his skills and qualities again here.”

Villa are keen to take advantage of United’s reluctance to extend his contract and are expected to explore a permanent agreement before the end of the season.
