Arne Slot has included 15-year-old winger Josh Abe into first-team training ahead of the Premier League match with Newcastle United.
Abe, full name Joshua Abe, is one of the most highly rated young wingers in the club’s system and is already playing above his age group with Liverpool’s Under-18s.
The England Under-16 international is widely viewed as one of the best academy wide players in the world for his age, thanks to his pace, direct running and confidence in one-against-one situations.
Slot has faced criticism at times this season for not using young players often enough, but recent matches suggest a clearer pathway is emerging. Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni were both given extended minutes in the recent win over Qarabag, while defender Amara Nallo also featured, reinforcing the message that opportunities are available when players meet first-team standards.
Abe’s promotion to senior training on Thursday was another sign of that approach. The teenager confirmed his involvement on social media after taking part in a session at the AXA Training Centre. While he is not expected to feature against Newcastle, the experience is a significant step in his development.
On the pitch, Abe has backed up the hype. He has scored three goals and provided two assists in seven league games for the Under-18s this season, marking him out as one of the academy’s standout performers.
Interest in his future is growing and clubs such as Chelsea and Arsenal are reported to be monitoring his situation, with his contract set to expire. A recent VIP visit to Real Madrid also fuelled speculation, although any move to Europe would have to wait until he turns 18.
For now, Liverpool’s strategy is clear. By exposing Abe to the demands of the senior squad early, Slot is aiming to show that Anfield remains the best place for one of the club’s brightest young talents to fulfil his potential.
