Anthony Gordon has apologised to his Newcastle teammates, fans, and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk following his red card in the 3-2 loss to Liverpool.
The 24-year-old was shown a straight red card in first-half stoppage time after a VAR review deemed his late challenge on Van Dijk dangerous. The tackle left visible stud marks on the Dutch defender’s calf and reduced Newcastle to 10 men in what was already a high-intensity match.
Taking to Instagram after the game, Gordon expressed remorse and made it clear that the foul was not intentional.
“I want to sincerely apologise to my teammates and the fans. My intentions were pure. I was just trying to create energy in the game and I mistimed the tackle,” he wrote. “I also want to apologise to Virgil. I would never intend to tackle somebody like this on purpose. We spoke after and he knows that.”
Gordon, who will now serve a three-match suspension, also reflected on the game and his pride in representing the club, despite the disappointing outcome.
“More importantly, I’m so proud of the time I spent on the pitch and how we played tonight. The atmosphere from you all is what makes SJP (St James’ Park) so special. I love everything we stand for as a club – and no more than right now. I’ll be back and better, the same as every other setback I’ve ever faced. See you soon.”
The red card was just one dramatic storyline in a match played under the shadow of Liverpool’s ongoing interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The club has rejected a 110 million pound bid from Liverpool for the Swedish international, but the saga continues with just days remaining in the transfer window.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, meanwhile, expressed pride in the effort his team put in, even under adversity. Speaking after the game, he praised the leadership and unity of his players.
