After the final whistle, Simeone became embroiled in a heated argument with some Liverpool supporters seated near the technical area. The altercation escalated quickly, and security personnels intervened, and the referee showed Simeone a red card.

In his post-match media briefing, the 55-year-old explained what pushed him to react in that manner.

“When they scored the third goal he turned around and insulted me. I’m a person, I’m human.

“Obviously my reaction is not justifiable, I insulted him. But it was 90 minutes of being insulted the whole time then you turn around, when your opponent has scored, and they are still insulting you. It is not that easy.

“I am not really going to get into the exact nature of the insults. I don’t want to get into that discussion. I know what went on behind the manager’s bench. I cannot solve society’s problems in one press conference. I have to live with it because it happens all the time.”

No one knows what will happen next, as UEFA is still awaiting the referee’s report. Once the report is received, a decision will be made regarding whether Simeone will face any sanctions.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said during his post-match interview that he can’t say much on the matter since he did not see what happened. “Yeah, it’s difficult for me to react on because I don’t know what happened exactly today. He was closer to the situation than I was.

“So it’s impossible for me to react, and if I react on that I already know what the Spanish media is going to write. So I think they should write two teams with great mentality fighting till the end. Adico came back. We scored 3-2. This is where I think this the game should be about because it was a great game”.

Liverpool’s next UEFA Champions League match will be on September 30 against Galatasaray. Liverpool and Galatasaray don’t play against each other quite often.

They have met four times in the UEFA Champions League. Their first two games in 2002 ended in draws ,0-0 at Anfield and 1-1 in Istanbul. In 2006, both teams scored big wins at home. Liverpool won 3-2 at Anfield, and Galatasaray also won 3-2 in Turkey.
