European Football Wrap: As you were in nerve-wracking Premier League title race, Arsenal grind out victory against ten-man Chelsea

This year’s Premier League title race is going to be a doozie. Pep’s Manchester City threw the first punch on Saturday, winning 1-0 at Elland Road to temporarily cut the deficit at the top to two points.

But it was far from comfortable. City were dealt a cruel blow ahead of the game, with star marksman Erling Haaland laid low by a minor injury. Leeds went into the match with plenty of confidence, having not tasted a home defeat under lights since August 2023. And they started brightly, catching City cold with an insistent press. Calvert-Lewin proved a real threat and really should have given Leeds the lead in the 17th minute. City began to exert more control as the match dragged on. Still, they struggled to create meaningful opportunities and were once bailed out by Donnarumma when Aaronson bore down on goal. But Pep’s men unlocked the Leeds defence with one intricate move down the left, as Cherki brilliantly picked out Alt Nouri, who in turn put it on a plate for the grateful Semenyo. And City looked more assured in the 2nd half, with Ryan Cherki orchestrating extended bouts of possession. Sure, Leeds would have the odd chance here or there. But City looked relatively unfazed, heaping all the pressure on Arteta’s league leaders.

Arsenal grind out victory against ten-man Chelsea

Arsenal reverted to their early-season ways, relying on set-piece chaos in an uninspired 2-1 win over Rosenior’s Chelsea. Arsenal started off quite brightly and took the lead in the 21st minute. Saka’s corner found Gabriel at the back post, whose reversed header was instinctively flicked toward goal by defensive partner William Saliba. If ever there was a goal to sum up Arsenal’s entire campaign; that was it. Chelsea were emboldened after going behind and gave Arsenal a taste of their own medicine shortly before the break, equalizing after a wicked corner was deflected into his own net by the otherwise brilliant Hincapie. Chelsea looked the better team after the break, bombarding the Arsenal box with balls from out wide. But the game completely tilted on its head in a crazy four-minute spell. A committed Jurrien Timber was rewarded in the 66th minute, ghosting into the box to nod in one of Rice’s trademark corners. Chelsea lost their heads and Pedro Neto was sent off for a 2nd bookable offence just a few minutes after going behind. To give Chelsea some credit, they did manage a few chances in the closing stages of the match. But it was ultimately not enough, with Arsenal making it back-to-back London derby wins to reassert their five-point lead.

Barcelona paint the Yellow Submarine blue and red

Barcelona appear to have put that dismal Atletico-Girona one-two punch behind them, beating Villarreal 4-1 to boost their title defence. The Yellow Submarine looked quite energized in the early stages and Barcelona struggled to implement their usual brand of free-flowing football. But everything changed in the 28th minute, as Ferman Lopez robbed Senegalese international Pape Gueye and slipped the ball through to a galloping Yamal. The teenager made no mistake, opening his body up to finish in Henry-esque fashion. Yamal then produced a goal straight out of a Messi YouTube highlight reel, driving and dinking his way through the Villarreal defence before whipping a curling effort into the top corner. Villarreal gave themselves a ray of hope just after the break, with Gueye making up for his earlier indiscretion with an opportunistic strike. Flick wisely decided to freshen up the midfield area, taking off the largely anonymous Dani Olmo for Pedri. The Spainard brought an immediate stability to the Barca midfield, threading the ball through to Yamal to complete his first ever Barca hat-trick. Lewandowski applied the finishing touches to the performance, prodding the ball home from close range after some solid marauding from Kounde on the right. Barca now have a comfy four-point lead ahead of Real’s match with Getafe tonight.

Der Klassiker lives up to namesake

Sure, the net result of Saturday’s Klassiker meant that this year’s Bundesliga race is now a foregone conclusion (which it always was). Bayern Munich are going to win this year’s title at a canter. But at least Dortmund didn’t die wondering in one of the more exciting Klassikers in recent history. The match started in tempestuous fashion, as Nico Schlotterback incredibly escaped a red card despite a vicious stud’s-up tackle on Josip Stanisic. The Dortmund centre-back made the most of his reprieve, heading Dortmund into the lead with their only shot on target in the first half. Die Roten came out swinging in the 2nd stanza, as Harry Kane equalized with a ropey left-footed effort in the 54th minute. In all too familiar scenes, the English goalscoring ace put Bayern into the lead from the spot in the 70th minute. But Daniel Svenssen set up a nervy finish with an impudent volley in the 83rd minute. Bayern were not to be outdone in the volleying stakes, as Joshua Kimmich underlined a commanding performance with a technically assured left-footed volley in the 87th minute.

Inter continue their Jekyll and Hyde act

What on earth happened to Inter in their Champions League clash with Bodø/Glimt? Their shock knockout exit at hands of the Norwegian minnows is the type of defeat that could reverberate for seasons to come. They never let their European disaster affect their monumental domestic form, easing past Genoa 2-0 to make it 14 wins in their last 15 Serie A matches. The incredible Federico Dimarco continued to fuel his Player of the Season claims, firing the Nerazzurri ahead with a thumping left-footed volley. Dimarco has now registered 20 goal involvements this season (rarified air for a wingback). I can’t help but be reminded of Alejandro Grimaldo’s exploits during Leverkusen’s Bundesliga campaign. Calhanoglu sealed the victory with a typically cool penalty kick in the 70th minute. AC Milan did manage to cut the deficit to ten points, taking down a pugnacious Cremonese 2-0 with two late strikes. Regardless, next weekend’s Derby della Madonnina feels like a largely symbolic clash at this point.

Player of the Week- Lamine Yamal

What more can you say about Lamine Yamal? He certainly could stake a claim to being the most accomplished teenager in football history. And he now has the stats to back it up, becoming the first player to have 100 goal involvements before the age of 19 (48 goals, 52 assists). He scored a magnificent hat-trick this weekend, showing the poise and composure of a player in his prime. That 2nd goal evoked Messi’s iconic solo effort against Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final. It’s mind-boggling to think what he could accomplish.
