The Citizens come into this match after suffering a 3-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League, ending their European journey. This is the first time in Pep Guardiola’s coaching career he has exited the Champions League without reaching the round of 16. The 54-year-old has won the Champions League three times, twice with Barcelona and once with Manchester City in 2022-2023.

For the past four seasons, Manchester City has dominated the Premier League, consistently finishing in first place with Arsenal closely trailing behind as runners-up. However, this season has seen a dramatic shift in fortunes for the Sky Blues. Having lost seven games and drawn five so far this season, the Citizens have been struggling to maintain the loft standards they’ve set over the last few years.

Speaking during a press conference Pep Guardiola said “They could sack me. That can happen. But leaving now? No option. If the board is not happy with me, they can do it. But leaving now in this position, no chance. When I feel it is time to leave, I will leave.”

Liverpool, who had previously been inconsistent and yo-yo-ing in the standings these past few seasons are now in first place. Arne Slot is leading Liverpool in the right direction after replacing Jurgen Klopp in June last year. The Reds have been delivering outstanding performances on the pitch, creating scoring chances aplenty, although they have just wobbled recently.

Slot believes City are on the up, and isn’t taking them for granted. He also added “Pep needs quality players to get the results. With players being now back it’s the same style of play but the results are better.”

Liverpool’s away form is excellent having not lost any match with nine wins and two draws. Manchester City has recorded two losses at home with eight wins and two draws which is average.
