Konate is reportedly seeking a significant pay rise on the contract he signed when he joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021 as a highly rated young prospect.

“We are in talks with him so that tells you what we want,” said Slot.

“It’s clear we would like him to stay but negotiations are ongoing so let’s see where that ends. We wouldn’t be in negotiations if we didn’t want him to stay.”

Liverpool’s hierarchy will be keen to avoid a repeat of recent years, during which several high-profile players have departed on free transfers.

Since 2021, the club have seen James Milner, Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Georginio Wijnaldum leave at the end of their contracts.

There was also the case of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who would have exited on a free before Real Madrid paid a 10-million-pound fee to secure him early for the Club World Cup in the United States in June.
