The BBC award, first presented in 1954, has long recognised the biggest figures in British sport. Formula 1 drivers have featured prominently through the decades, with Lewis Hamilton, Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell all winning it twice, while Jackie Stewart and Stirling Moss also lifted the trophy.

Should Norris prevail, he would become only the sixth F1 driver to do so.

Voting will take place live during the ceremony on Thursday, 18 December. Norris will contest the prize alongside darts sensation Luke Littler, golfer Rory McIlroy, England footballers Hannah Hampton and Chloe Kemp, and England rugby union star Ellie Kildunne.

Bookmakers have placed McIlroy as the early favourite, although Norris remains a strong contender following his title-winning campaign.

Norris’ nomination capped a season defined by remarkable consistency and calm execution under pressure. He sealed the championship with a third-place finish at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, finishing just two points clear of Verstappen.

McLaren officials confirmed shortly after the finale that Norris will run the number one on his car for his 2026 title defence.

Reflecting on the calibre of this year’s shortlist, BBC Sport director Alex Kay-Jelski said the achievements on display across British sport in 2025 have been “breathtaking”, adding: “Each one has delivered moments of pure brilliance that have defined 2025.

“It has been incredible to watch, and I cannot wait to honour their achievements and to see who the nation chooses as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025.”
