Verstappen, a four-time world champion, delivered a composed performance to take victory, yet he ultimately missed out on a record-equalling fifth consecutive Formula One drivers’ title by just two points.
Pre-race speculation centred on whether Verstappen might attempt to back up the pack to give Lando Norris a chance of being overtaken.
However, Oscar Piastri’s aggressive start rendered any such tactics impossible. The Australian, beginning on the hard compound while most of the field opted for mediums, overtook Norris on the opening lap and immediately demonstrated competitive pace. That left Verstappen, aged 28, unable to slow the field without risking Piastri passing him for the lead.
Instead, Verstappen was forced to push ahead and control the race from the front, abandoning any strategic manoeuvring that might have influenced the title outcome.
His hopes that Norris might encounter misfortune never materialised, and with Piastri finishing second and Norris securing third, the championship slipped from Verstappen’s grasp.
“Well, honestly, we maximised everything that we could,” said Verstappen. “We put it on pole, and we won the race. And I think also in the race, we had very strong pace.
“So, there’s really not much that I could have done different. I think what complicated it a bit was that Oscar was on a different strategy.
“So, you never know, of course, when he then pits, how much pace he has in hand to catch up again. That also complicates a bit trying to keep the pack together or whatever.
“But, yeah, overall, just very proud again of the weekend that we had. We put it all out there, and, yeah, the car was actually enjoyable to drive.”
