Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has issued a stark warning to four-time world champion Max Verstappen, suggesting Red Bull could plummet to the midfield, akin to Williams’ current struggles, if their new engine falters.

“They’re launching a power unit in 2026, and nobody knows how competitive it will be,” Montoya said in an interview with Instant Casino. “Red Bull could easily find themselves where Williams are now.

“If they end up mid-pack, Verstappen will have to decide if he wants to stay. The clauses in his contract make leaving early a real possibility.”

Rumours swirling in the paddock, amplified by posts on X, suggest Red Bull are grappling with challenges in developing their power unit at their Milton Keynes base.

Meanwhile, Mercedes are widely regarded as frontrunners in the race to master the new regulations, fueling speculation that Verstappen might seek a team powered by their engines. A move to McLaren, however, appears unlikely, as Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are locked into long-term deals.

“McLaren just re-signed Piastri,” Montoya noted. “Would Mercedes drop Kimi Antonelli to make room for Verstappen? Or would they part ways with George Russell? Those are tough calls, and I’m not sure how fast they’d make them.”

Verstappen’s future remains a hot topic as Red Bull roll the dice on their ambitious engine project. With their dominance potentially at risk, the 2026 season could reshape the grid, and Verstappen’s career.

The F1 circus next heads to the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, where drivers will tackle 57 laps of the 5.412-kilometre Miami International Autodrome at Hard Rock Stadium. Fans will be watching closely for any signs of Red Bull’s preparations for their high-stakes future.
