The Brackley-based squad celebrated a commanding victory in Montreal, where George Russell secured pole position, the fastest lap, and the race win, while teammate Kimi Antonelli marked his first Formula 1 podium.

Wolff, however, tempered expectations for the upcoming race at the Red Bull Ring. “The victory and double podium in Montreal were a testament to the hard work at Brackley and Brixworth,” Wolff said.

“But we’ve made it clear that we cannot expect this level of performance every weekend. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve suited the W16’s strengths, with its low-speed corners and smoother tarmac that’s kinder to tyres.

“Austria will be a different challenge, and our rivals are likely to be much stronger.”

The Canadian Grand Prix highlighted Mercedes’ recent progress, with upgrades to the W16 paying dividends.

Yet Wolff acknowledged that the Red Bull Ring’s high-speed corners and demanding layout would test their improvements. “Spielberg will be a key benchmark for our recent updates,” Wolff added. “We’re focused on building momentum from Canada and maximising points, with the hope of challenging for the podium again.”

Russell’s victory at the Red Bull Ring last season came after a late collision between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen handed him the win.

This time, Mercedes aim to fight for a podium on merit. The 71-lap Austrian Grand Prix, held on the 4.318-kilometre circuit in Spielberg, is set for Sunday, June 29.

Recent posts on X echo Wolff’s cautious optimism, with fans noting Mercedes’ improved pace but highlighting the fierce competition expected from Red Bull and McLaren in Austria. The consensus among observers is that the Red Bull Ring’s unique characteristics will reveal whether Mercedes’ resurgence is sustainable.
