Much of the attention has centred on engine regulations, particularly the compression ratio debate that dominated the build-up to the season.

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has since instructed Mercedes to make adjustments to its power unit from June 1. The team also faced questions following the Chinese Grand Prix regarding unusual front wing movement, though it clarified the behaviour was unintended and caused by an unforeseen issue.

Russell acknowledged the pressure but made his stance clear.
“That’s just how sport goes,” he said. “We’ve worked so hard to get ourselves in this position, and the best team should come out on top.

“We’ve had four years of struggle. Other teams have dominated in that time. Just because we’re back on top, I don’t think it’s right that everybody is trying to slow us down, especially when you’re only two races in.”

Despite Mercedes’ strong advantage, Russell warned the season remains unpredictable. The sweeping 2026 regulation changes have opened the door for rapid development across the grid, while the ADUO system gives trailing manufacturers extra opportunities to close the gap.

“It’s a long season, and things will change,” he explained. “We’ve already seen Red Bull carrying extra weight, and McLaren hasn’t introduced upgrades yet – they’re still on their Bahrain package.

“We’ve started well, but there’s no guarantee it stays that way.”

Attention now turns to the Japanese Grand Prix at the iconic Suzuka International Racing Course, where the true competitive order of the 2026 season is expected to evolve further.
