The result strengthened Mercedes’ grip on second place in the Constructors’ Championship, moving them 27 points clear of Ferrari with five races remaining.

Out of contract at the end of the current campaign, Russell and Mercedes remain in negotiations over an extension. Both sides are optimistic a deal will be finalised soon, although Wolff has made it clear there is no rush.

“Good things take time,” Wolff said. “It’s about fine details, not the big topics. George has been formidable this year, consistent, fast, and in complete control. He’s matured a lot, and we can all see that.”

Now in his fourth season with Mercedes, Russell is enjoying his most successful year in Formula 1. With two wins and eight podiums, he is on course to surpass his personal best of 275 points from 2022.

Wolff was particularly impressed by how Russell handled the Singapore weekend, contrasting it with the heartbreak of 2023 when he crashed out on the final lap while chasing a win.

“Last year’s mistake at Marina Bay is a perfect example of how far he’s come,” Wolff explained. “This time, he was in complete command, managing the tyres, keeping Max in check, and never putting a wheel wrong. Everything was in sync, car, driver, and team.”

Russell’s strong form has also silenced any lingering doubts about his role as Mercedes’ team leader, with Wolff offering full backing to the 27-year-old.

The Formula 1 season continues with the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin on Sunday, 19 October, where Russell will aim to extend Mercedes’ advantage and strengthen his case for a long-term deal.
