Despite his extensive experience and success in the sport, the seven-time world champion has faced significant hurdles in adapting to Ferrari’s unique car setup and team environment.
One of the primary obstacles has been the adjustment to Ferrari’s braking system. Hamilton, who spent over a decade with Mercedes, was accustomed to Carbon Industrie brakes.
The switch to Brembo components in the Ferrari SF-25 has required a significant change in his driving style. He noted, “I have never used engine braking before, for the past 12 years, we never used engine braking, but here we use it a lot in the car.”
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur admitted that both he and Hamilton “stupidly” underestimated the scale of the challenge when the Briton joined the team.
Vasseur explained, “We collectively underestimated the change of environment… He spent 2006 to 2024 in this environment, and then he arrived at Ferrari. And we were stupidly expecting that he will have everything under control.”
Hamilton’s struggles were evident during the Hungarian Grand Prix, where he qualified 12th, while teammate Charles Leclerc secured pole position. Hamilton expressed his frustration, stating, “I’m useless. It’s me. Every time. Probably Ferrari needs to change driver.”
Despite these challenges, Hamilton remains committed to his new team. He acknowledged the difficulties but emphasized the importance of perseverance, stating, “Honestly, the harder it is, the better it can make you. This year has been tough for everyone in the team, but it has prepared us for better days.”
Looking ahead, Hamilton is focused on the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix, scheduled for Sunday, 21 September, at the Baku City Circuit. He remains determined to adapt fully to Ferrari’s dynamics and contribute to the team’s success in the remainder of the season.
