Madrid have secured the slot previously held by Imola, marking a significant shift for the iconic Italian venue.

Imola made a triumphant return to the F1 calendar in 2020, stepping in during a Covid-disrupted season. Their resilience earned them a multi-year contract through 2025, showcasing their ability to host world-class racing.

However, their absence from the 2026 lineup has sparked disappointment but also determination among local officials and fans.

Imola mayor Marco Panieri addressed the exclusion in a statement, saying, “The provisional 2026 Formula 1 calendar has been announced, and Imola are not included. This news, while anticipated, brings disappointment and bitterness.

“Our region have proven their ability to deliver an extraordinary grand prix with record attendance in recent years.”

Panieri highlighted the circuit’s unique appeal, noting, “The Imola Grand Prix were cherished by fans and drivers alike, blending thrilling on-track action with the charm of our historic region.”

Despite the setback, he remained resolute, adding, “This is not the end. We have always known the calendar’s complexities, but we are committed to bringing the grand prix back.”

Imola’s recent history has not been without challenges.

In 2023, devastating floods forced the cancellation of their race, a blow to the region. Undeterred, local stakeholders, including the Emilia Romagna Region, the Municipality of Imola, and the Con.Ami consortium, had already allocated resources for 2026, demonstrating their commitment. “We honored our pledge to recover from the 2023 cancellation and were ready to host in 2026,” Panieri said.

The circuit’s leadership are now pushing for action. Since May 26, they have called for an Institutional Table with government and sports authorities to negotiate Imola’s return.

“This is a time for tenacity, not resignation,” Panieri emphasized. “We have achieved the impossible before, like hosting F1 in 2020 when the world was paralyzed. The fight is far from over.”

On X, fans have echoed Imola’s resolve, with posts praising the circuit’s passionate atmosphere and urging F1 to reinstate the event.

As Imola gear up for their next move, the F1 season continues with the Canadian Grand Prix, set for 70 laps at the 4.361-kilometer Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday, June 15.

For now, Imola’s focus remains on reclaiming their place among the sport’s elite venues, fueled by a legacy of perseverance and ambition.
