The British driver, however, has downplayed his favourite status, insisting it does not alter his personal belief that he can win.

Russell impressed during the Barcelona shakedown, finishing second on the unofficial timesheets, while Mercedes reportedly led the session in overall laps completed.

The performance has fuelled speculation that the team may have a competitive edge with the new 50/50 hybrid power units, combining electrical and combustion power.

Mercedes is widely tipped to spearhead Formula 1’s new era. After previously dominating the sport following the 2014 engine rule overhaul, the team struggled in the ground-effect era due to ‘porpoising’ issues.

Last season marked the final campaign under the ground-effect regulations, and 2026 sees a return to over-body aerodynamics with shorter, lighter cars that incorporate active aerodynamic features.

Bookmakers have responded to Mercedes’ shakedown form by installing Russell as the favourite to claim the championship.

“Didn’t really feel anything from hearing that, to be honest,” Russell said.

“I’ve said for a long time, I feel ready to fight for a world championship. And whether we have that comment above us or not, that does not change my approach one single bit.

“I’m working so hard. Team, everybody here has been working flat out to really maximise this new set of regulations.

“And I’m honestly just so excited by the challenge, because it is a huge challenge adapting to these new cars – how the energy management works, the re-harvesting of the batteries, getting your head around the boost system, the overtake modes, the active aero.

“There’s a lot of things we need to learn very quickly, but I feel I can take advantage from that. And I feel confident with myself and my team.”
