Indian Captain Rohit Sharma will step aside from test cricket but will continue to play one-day international cricket and will remain captain for that format, as he led the team when they won the Champions Trophy in March.
This comes after a long, drawn-out poor form run from the legendary batter, with him scoring only one fifty in his last 15 test innings, averaging 10.93, a span that includes 10 single-digit scores.
The 38-year-old hangs up his boots having made 4,301 Test runs at an average of 40.57 with 12 centuries. His top score of all time was 212 against South Africa in Ranchi in 2019, scoring off 255 balls.
Announcing this news on his Instagram account, Sharma thanked fans for their support and expressed how it has been an honor to represent his country.
“Hello everyone, I would like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years.
“I will continue to represent India in the ODI format. India is preparing to travel to England for the five-test series this summer, which will start on June 20 at Headingly.
The question on everyone’s lips right now in India is, who will succeed Sharma?
Rumor has it that Shubman Gill is at the forefront to replace Sharma as Test Captain because Jasprit Brumrah who was vice-captain of the test team on India’s Test Tour in Australia and led the team in the two tests Sharma missed, is likely to miss this opportunity because of workload management of the upcoming World Test Championship.
The squad selection is expected to happen later this month, which will be led by Ajit Agarkar.
