2nd ODI preview: West Indies vs New Zealand best bets

Second ODI preview: West Indies vs New Zealand

The West Indies took hold of the series with victory in the opener and there will be little time for the Black Caps to turn things around.

Just one rest day separates the ODI matches at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

West Indies vs New Zealand | Second ODI | Friday 19 August 2022 | Kensington Oval, Kingston, Barbados |

West Indies

The West Indies limited New Zealand’s power on a tricky track in Barbados and weren’t extended in the chase.

Akeal Hosein’s strangle job set up the victory and he was unfortunate to miss out on the man of the match award.

Shamarh Brooks was the cool head in the chase and also gave the West Indies some impetus and momentum.

Young allrounder Keacy Carty will likely get another chance to impress in the middle order for the West Indies.

New Zealand

New Zealand couldn’t find the pace on the Kensington Oval strip last time out as their top order hitters didn’t face enough balls early on and wickets kept tumbling.

Martin Guptill seems to take a while to get going in this format and it probably didn’t help the cause that he and Kane Williamson came together at first drop.

New Zealand might consider pushing Williamson down to four and promoting Finn Allen instead.

Mitchell Santner was nearly as effective as Hosein but with only a modest total to defend his efforts were in vain in the opener. However, Williamson would do well to get him into the attack as soon as possible on Friday.

Verdict: New Zealand

New Zealand should learn their lessons and find a way to win.
