2nd Test preview: England vs South Africa

Second Test preview: England vs South Africa

England were unable to deploy their bold new game against South Africa last time out as they were handed a thumping.

There is incredible quality in the Three Lions ranks and cricket fans can expect to see a response from Ben Stokes and company.

England vs South Africa | Second Test | Thursday 25 August – Monday 29 August | Old Trafford, Manchester

England

England went into the series knowing they had top order problems but believing they could be overcome with the power of positivity; Norman Vincent Peale would be delighted.

However, the good vibes couldn’t do much for Zak Crawley who could be the scapegoat for the first Test loss after a string of poor performances.

Crawley’s opening partner Alex Lees has probably done enough in recent matches to survive despite struggling with his footwork against the Proteas pace attack.

Young Matthew Potts could be the man to miss out if England look to wedge in form seamer Ollie Robinson into the XI.

South Africa

As first Tests of a series go South Africa had about as good a time of things as any visiting team might hope to enjoy but they might not have learned too much.

The Proteas have come in with a focus on their own game, particularly being lethal with the ball in hand and seeking to occupy the crease when its their turn to bat.

Sarel Erwee’s rise has made the Proteas that much more solid up front as evidenced by his top score in the first Test.

Formerly a weakness, South Africa’s lower order have also stepped up and they could need more of the same to battle back and England counter.

Verdict: England

In home conditions and with their backs to the wall, England will be dangerous.
