Marcus Stoinis has left Australia in the lurch ahead of the Champions Trophy with his sudden retirement from ODIs less than two weeks out from the tournament.
This unexpected decision marks another blow to the world champions as they gear up for the elite eight-team, 50-over tournament, set to begin on February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai.
Already captain Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the tournament due to an ongoing ankle issue as well as all-rounder Mitchell Marsh with a back injury.
“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an amazing journey, and I am grateful for every moment in the green and gold,” said Stoinis, 35, who debuted in 2015.
He became a regular fixture in the team the following year, scoring an unbeaten 146 against New Zealand at Eden Park, also taking three wickets in the match.
“I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan,” he added.
Stoinis began his ODI career against England at Old Trafford a decade ago and made his T20I debut during the same tour.
Having played 74 ODIs, Stoinis was a key figure in Australia’s World Cup-winning side in 2023.
He shared that his decision to retire from 50-over cricket was driven by his desire to focus on his T20 career, where he will remain available for national selection.
“Making this decision wasn’t easy, but I believe it’s the right time to step away from ODIs and focus entirely on the next phase of my career,” said Stoinis.
Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald praised the dynamic allrounder, acknowledging his importance both on and off the field.
“Stoin has been a vital part of our ODI team for the last decade. He’s been not just an essential player but also a fantastic character in the group,” McDonald said.
“He’s a natural leader, extremely popular, and an all-around great guy. He deserves recognition for his remarkable ODI career and all of his accomplishments.”
Cricket Australia confirmed that the final Champions Trophy squad will be announced following the conclusion of the Test series against Sri Lanka later this week.
