WOLVERHAMPTON

Race 4 – RIVER PRIDE 10/1

George Boughey’s RIVER PRIDE can strike in this seven-furlong fillies’ handicap test. The four-year-old has run four times this year, taking on six and seven-furlong trips on the all-weather and running competitively without winning. Those performances have come in some hotly-contested Saturday races, however, and this event has attracted slightly less formidable company amongst which she can thrive.

Race 5 – PLUMETTE 5/1

PLUMETTE can bounce back in the fifth this evening at Wolverhampton. A course and distance winner on three separate occasions, including twice this year, the David Loughnane-trained mare stepped up to an extended mile here last time out but was hindered by another horse and could not mount a challenge. With luck on her side, she is poised to resume winning ways and Laura Pearson’s 3lb allowance only strengthens her claim.

LINGFIELD

Race 3 – EIGHT MILE 2/1

At Lingfield, it is George Scott’s EIGHT MALE who appeals in the the third at Lingfield. The three-year-old has been placed twice this year on the all-weather, when second at Southwell and third at Wolverhampton over seven and six furlongs respectively, though the latter run was slightly blighted by interference. His mark has remained static and Benoit de la Sayette’s 3lb claim eases the burden he would otherwise carry as he steps back up to seven furlongs, and looks to take a first career win.

Race 4 – ERMESINDE 6/5

The Kevin Philippart de Foy-trained ERMESINDE can make it two from two in the novice stakes contest. A three-year-old daughter of Golden Horn, she won on her racecourse debut when taking a 10-furlong Lingfield event by a length in early February. She returns to the same course to run over the same distance and looks promising, having run like a horse with more to offer last time out.

Race 6 – AFTERNOON TEA 9/2

Tony Carroll’s AFTERNOON TEA can land this classified stakes test. The gelding has been getting the hang of things on the all-weather this year, most recently finishing fourth in a 10-furlong Lingfield contest when beaten two and half lengths. His prior turf starts were over distances in excess of two miles, however, suggesting this step up to a mile and a half will play into his hands.

WINCANTON

Race 1 – BRENTFORD HOPE 2/7

BRENTFORD HOPE is an interesting prospect in this maiden hurdle as he makes his first start for Harry Derham. A former Flat performer for Richard Hughes, the six-year-old was rated 107 on the level at his peak and was a Group Three runner-up in the Prix Messidor at Chantilly. His latter three starts were all over hurdles and he was second on each occasion, most recently showing promise when beaten a length and a half in a Wetherby handicap. Now in the hands of the in-form Derham, he looks on the cusp of winning for the first time in this new discipline.

Race 4 – FLYING VERSE 10/3

Under the National Hunt code there is action at Wincanton, where David Dennis’ FLYING VERSE can land this handicap chase over three miles and a furlong. A consistent type, some of the 11-year-old’s best runs have come over extended trips and he was a winner when taking a three-mile Doncaster veterans’ event. That was a good prize and if he reproduces that effort he should be highly competitive.
