Match context

Against all odds, a young and inexperienced Durban side claimed a remarkable 40-33 win over Le LOU last week, and with five Springboks recalled for this trip to Wales, JP Pietersen’s charges will be in an even better position to keep up with the pacesetters at the summit of the URC.

That win in France came off the back of a seriously impressive team performance, with the side’s youngsters stepping up big time in the absence of so many of the frontline players that had done duty against the Stormers in a losing cause the week prior.

Individuals like speedster Litelihle Bester, who bagged a brace and scored the winning try, would have given their coach plenty of food for thought going forward this season, with the overall manner of the victory speaking volumes for the culture and character in the set-up right now.

Andre Esterhuizen, Thomas du Toit, Ox Nche, Edwill van der Merwe and Ethan Hooker are all expected to return for this clash, providing the team with a major boost with a tour game at Thomond Park still to come. If they can slot back in seamlessly and maintain the level of hunger and drive their teammates produced a week ago, the KwaZulu-Natalians will be tough to stop.

Sixth-placed Cardiff are one point and one spot below the Sharks on the URC standings and come off the back of a round three 29-5 loss at Leinster and 28-12 defeat to Northampton Saints. With two wins from four matches in all competitions so far this term, the Blue and Blacks will be aiming to put some consistency into their results heading into the backend of the year.

In the last four meetings between the clubs, each has won twice with the Sharks claiming victories in the two previous encounters, including a 42-22 result at the Arms Park in January 2025.

Players to watch

Harri Millard (Cardiff)

The 30-year-old will need to have a big evening at outside centre, with the likes of Esterhuizen and the rest of the Sharks’ big backs set to be targeting his channel. A Cardiff Academy graduate and former Wales U20 international, much of Millard’s side’s hopes will rest on his performance and his communication with those around him, especially if the visitors get quick ball off the back of their set pieces.

He touched down in the third quarter against Saints and keeping up that try-scoring form here certainly wouldn’t harm Cardiff’s cause either.

Jordan Hendrikse (Hollywoodbets Sharks)

Hendrikse made his long-awaited injury comeback against Lyon last week, kicking five conversions in the win following his hamstring trouble in a fine first performance of the season. With Vusi Moyo out with shoulder issues, the 25-year-old will likely be backed for the next while as the Sharks aim to finish the year with as many wins as possible.

His presence at the Arms Park will need to be accurate on the 4G pitch, but signs are positive given what we produced a week ago. With the likes of Lyon themselves, as well as fellow French clubs Stade Français and Montpellier and even Saracens reportedly vying for the two-cap Bok’s signature, he’ll have plenty of eyes on him come Friday.

Tactical overview

The 4G pitch, so unpopular amongst pro players, will make things difficult for the visitors, with Cardiff’s familiarity with the environment likely to work in their favour.

Sharks lock Stephan Lewies made mention midweek that the general consensus was that the fast-paced, artificial nature of the surface was not something teams enjoyed, with, among other things, the bounce of the ball moving differently. They will need to adapt quickly in the Welsh capital regardless.

The Sharks’ set piece, usually the cornerstone of their game, was pulled apart by the Stormers in Cape Town a fortnight ago and their returning Bok front rankers will be expected to produce a much-improved display in this department on Friday. Especially playing on the 4G, getting their fundamentals right will have a direct impact on the final scoreline.

Cardiff started slowly against Northampton, losing their first two lineouts and putting themselves on the backfoot early on, and the winner of this tie may well be the team whose set piece functions most efficiently.

Prediction

The Hollywoodbets Sharks to take this one on the board.
