The Premier League sack race: who will blink first?

The modern English Premier League is an unforgiving arena where time is a luxury few can afford. Seven games into the 2026/27 campaign, the top flight has yet to see its first managerial casualty – but the axes are being sharpened.

With multiple club hierarchies growing increasingly restless over abysmal starts, structural chaos, and tactical regression, the race to avoid the dreaded vote of confidence is reaching a boiling point. Among the four heavyweights currently feeling the heaviest pressure, a clear hierarchy of vulnerability has emerged.

Here is how the scenarios shape up for the managers under the microscope, ranked from the most secure to the one standing directly over the trapdoor.

4. Alvaro Arbeloa (Fulham) – breathing room

Fulham boss Alvaro Arbeloa spent the opening weeks of the season firmly in the crosshairs. Succeeding the long-serving Marco Silva was always going to be an uphill battle, and starting the campaign with a loss of defensive shape led to zero wins from the first six games. However, a crucial 1-0 victory over Hull City at Craven Cottage at the weekend has acted as a critical safety valve. While his tactical structure remains far from convincing, the three points bought the Spaniard crucial breathing room, causing his sack race odds to drift slightly out to 7/1. For now, he is the safest of the endangered quartet.

3. Matthias Jaissle (Newcastle United) – the looming ambition

Taking over from Eddie Howe, Matthias Jaissle knew that Newcastle United’s Saudi-backed ownership expects the club to compete with the elite. While reports out of St. James’ Park suggest his dressing room backing remains intact, a recent 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa and a humiliating 4-1 loss to newly-promoted Coventry City have left the Magpies languishing in the bottom half. The board’s stated target of global prominence means patience is thin. Jaissle faces a daunting run of four away fixtures. If he fails to arrest this slide quickly, the club’s hierarchy will not hesitate to look elsewhere.

2. Michael Carrick (Manchester United) – the heavyweight on the brink

Michael Carrick is currently enduring a relentless storm at Old Trafford. Given the permanent job earlier in the year, he has overseen Manchester United’s worst start to a league season in 40 years, picking up just seven points from seven matches. A recent draw away to Leeds United provided a brief stay of execution, but Carrick remains the 7/4 market favourite to go next. With co-owners INEOS reportedly tracking former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, Carrick is one heavy defeat away from the sack.

1. Pierre Sage (Crystal Palace) – the immediate danger

No one is in greater peril than Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage. Just four months into his tenure, his tactical methods have reportedly disillusioned the dressing room. The breaking point arrived in the M23 derby, where Palace suffered a catastrophic 5-0 hammering by rivals Brighton, marking the club’s heaviest defeat in several decades. Consequently, bookmakers slashed Sage’s odds from 8/1 to a terrifying 2/1. Ahead of a pivotal clash against Newcastle, Sage is officially the most likely manager to be sacked first this season.
