Mekies took charge in the summer of 2025 after Christian Horner was sacked following 20 years at the helm. His new deal comes after a difficult start to the 2026 season, with Red Bull making significant improvements to their car and Max Verstappen winning the last two races in Malaysia and Singapore.

The extension also follows Verstappen’s decision to commit to Red Bull until the end of 2030, ending a period of uncertainty over the four-time world champion’s future.

In a statement, Red Bull’s principal shareholders, Chalerm Yoovidhya and Mark Mateschitz, praised Mekies for guiding the team through a period of transition while preserving its competitive identity.

“ This extension reflects our confidence in his leadership and our shared belief in the long-term vision of the team,” they said.

Oliver Mintzlaff, the chief executive responsible for Red Bull’s Formula One programme, described Mekies as a leader who combined technical expertise with strategic thinking and an understanding of the team’s culture.

“Continuity in leadership is a key ingredient for sustained success,” Mintzlaff said.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of comments from Horner, who told the Times that Red Bull had “lost its mojo, its presence, its vibe”. Verstappen’s recent victories have offered a timely response, suggesting the team’s technical development is beginning to deliver results.

Mekies said he was proud to continue with the team and thanked the shareholders, Mintzlaff and staff for their confidence.

“What makes this team special is the way everyone comes together in pursuit of the same goal,” he said.

The long-term agreement signals Red Bull’s intention to prioritise stability as they seek to restore their position at the front of Formula One, with Verstappen’s commitment and the car’s recent progress providing a foundation for the years ahead.
