The England captain took his tally to 36 goals in 40 Champions League appearances since turning 30, surpassing Messi’s 35 in 48 matches. Kane also extended his scoring streak in the competition to nine consecutive appearances, moving alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bayern’s night, however, ended in frustration after they recovered from two goals down before conceding a late equaliser with 10 men.

Viking stunned the visitors early when Gianni Stensness headed in a corner inside two minutes. Peter Christiansen doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 38th minute, leaving Bayern facing an unexpected challenge.

Kane sparked the recovery by converting a penalty in the 54th minute before heading home Joshua Kimmich’s cross six minutes later. Luis Díaz completed the turnaround in the 71st minute, finishing from close range to put Bayern ahead.

But Michael Olise’s dismissal for a second bookable offence left Vincent Kompany’s side vulnerable. Substitute Herman Haugen headed home in the 90th minute to earn Viking a memorable point.

Kane’s scoring run now puts him within reach of another landmark. Ronaldo holds the record for finding the net in 11 consecutive Champions League appearances, leaving Kane needing goals in his next two matches to equal it. Bayern host Arsenal on 21 October, although Olise will be suspended.

For Viking, the draw marked another milestone in a rise that has taken them from Norway’s second division in 2018 to the continent’s leading club competition. The Stavanger side won their first Norwegian league title in 34 years last season.

Captain Zlatko Tripic said he was immensely proud of his team’s performance against one of Europe’s most decorated clubs.

Viking travel to face Aston Villa on 21 October, while Bayern must regroup after letting victory slip away.
