Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down Sidiki Cherif inside the area. The goal was Coventry’s first at home in the Premier League since John Hartson scored in a 1-0 victory over Sunderland in April 2001, prompting jubilant scenes at the CBS Arena.

The hosts carried their momentum into the second half, with Cherif doubling the advantage three minutes after the restart. The teenager finished clinically to cap another rapid start from Coventry, who had struggled for goals during their opening five matches.

Newcastle briefly threatened a recovery when Sven Botman unleashed a superb long-range strike in the 70th minute. But Coventry restored their two-goal cushion when substitute Ellis Simms scored with a deflected effort, leaving the visitors with too much to do.

Eighteen-year-old Stephen Mfuni then provided the perfect finale, driving into the penalty area before curling a superb finish into the top-right corner four minutes from the end of normal time.

The victory lifts Coventry to 14th, level on points with Manchester United, while Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle remain 11th with eight points from six matches.

Lampard’s team had found it difficult to build momentum after their first league victory against Nottingham Forest, with the international break interrupting their progress. Yet they started Monday’s match with purpose, capitalising on Hornicek’s error before surviving a spell of Newcastle pressure.

Bobby Thomas made two important blocks to deny Matias Fernandez-Pardo before half-time, ensuring Coventry maintained their lead.

After difficult opening fixtures against Arsenal and Manchester City, the performance offered renewed encouragement for Lampard and his players. Their attacking confidence finally surfaced, and a memorable night suggested Coventry could have more than survival in mind this season.
