Match context

The Stormers arrive home after an opening two-game tour of Europe that yielded a great 29-15 win at Connacht and narrow 17-13 loss in Edinburgh last week. With one more round to go before the start of the Champions Cup, John Dobson’s troops need a big response against the Durbanites in the Mother City, especially considering what happened last season.

The Capetonians were beaten twice by the men in black and white in 2025/26, a rare double for the Sharks that had a direct impact on the former’s final log placing. The memory of those losses will still be fresh in the minds of the players, who’ll be frothing for a chance at dishing out some payback.

Key for the hosts this week will be fixing their diabolical lineout, which was a complete shambles in the Scottish capital and resulted in their losing a ridiculous 11 on the night. To be blunt, that is a quite unbelievable stat, and this will certainly be an area the Sharks look to target.

JP Pietersen’s team top the log following successive home bonus point victories over Ospreys and Leinster, with their performance in the latter clash last week being a particular standout.

Boosted by the return of their Springboks, the Sharks played some superb rugby to down the double defending champions, with their score just over 10-minutes from fulltime involving Bok trio Edwill van der Merwe, Eben Etzebeth and Andre Esterhuizen being an early try of the season contender.

They’ll be in for a much sterner examination in their first away game of the campaign however, especially with so many internationals set to turn out for the Stormers. Deon Fourie, Damian Willemse, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Cobus Reinach, Wilco Louw and Zach Porthen are all expected to be back, making this arguably the biggest game of the URC season so far.

Players to watch

Damian Wilemse (Stormers)

Many people’s pick for the best fullback in the game right now, Willemse will have a huge role to play in the backfield. His tactical kicking and high ball expertise will be vital for the Stormers, who will need to stave off the likes of speedsters Ethan Hooker and van der Merwe in the air, and how and when Willemse joins the hosts’ attack will also directly influence the flow of the contest.

If he brings his international form to Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, he’ll be worth his weight in gold.

Eben Etzebeth (Hollywoodbets Sharks)

Never write the great man off. With his desire having been questioned by so many keyboard warriors after hardly playing for the Sharks last season due to a combination of suspension and injury, the mighty Ysterbeth was in monstrous touch against Leinster. His hunger and physicality were palpable in that 26-20 win, and more of the same will be needed on the west coast in round three.

Expect another showstopper from Etzebeth at his old stomping ground.

Tactical overview

The Stormers’ set piece sans their Boks has so far failed to inspire much optimism in their supporters this season, especially the aforementioned lineout, and the Sharks will be going all in to target these areas. The Durbanites were leaders at the scrum and lineout last term and will be desperate to pile more misery on the hosts, though the inclusion of players like Fourie, Louw and Porthen will make things more difficult in this regard.

With Paul de Villiers on the pitch, the Sharks must also be tidy on the deck, and their loose trio cannot afford to switch off or risk the Bok fetcher causing breakdown mayhem. The collisions will be another main attraction, especially with so many internationals involved, and this will probably be one of those games Rassie Erasmus watches from behind his fingers given the high probability of injury.

Reinach and Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s presence will always be an ace for the Stormers, and with the ever-present threat of Willemse joining the attack, the defensive structures of the Sharks will be severely tested. Esterhuizen and his fellow Sharks co-captains need to be constantly communicating with those around them to ensure things remain organised and watertight.

This match should come down to a few key moments, and with so many Stormers Boks only set to play their first URC game of the season this weekend, the away side could have the edge given their stars have already got one together under the belt.

Prediction

The Hollywoodbets Sharks to take it on the board and maintain their unbeaten start to the season in what should be an almighty Cape clash.
