England smashed the highest ODI total ever recorded at Lord’s before holding off a spirited India chase to secure a 27-run victory and a 2-1 series win.
The hosts piled up 387-3 – the highest ODI total at Lord’s – before restricting India to 360-7, sealing England’s first bilateral ODI series win over the world’s top-ranked side since 2018. The triumph also completed a dominant white-ball tour following their 4-0 T20 series sweep.
Ben Duckett produced the highest individual ODI score at Lord’s, smashing 141 from 135 balls to surpass Viv Richards’ previous record of 138 not out. The left-hander struck 18 fours and a six while sharing a commanding opening stand of 192 with Jacob Bethell, who narrowly missed out on a maiden ODI century with 91.
Joe Root maintained his outstanding form with an unbeaten 74 from 48 balls, extending his run to six consecutive ODI half-centuries, before Jos Buttler blasted an unbeaten 41 from just 13 deliveries as England hammered 82 runs from the final five overs.
India’s bowlers struggled throughout, particularly in the absence of injured pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Gurnoor Brar conceded 97 runs from his 10 overs, while Prince Yadav returned figures of 1-79 after dismissing Duckett with a return catch.
India’s daunting chase remained alive for much of the innings thanks to Rohit Sharma, who rolled back the years with a magnificent 138 from 110 balls. The 39-year-old struck 17 fours and five sixes for his 34th ODI century, sharing a 147-run opening partnership with Shubman Gill (77) before adding another century stand with Virat Kohli (74).
Gill was trapped lbw by Adil Rashid before Bethell delivered the breakthrough England desperately needed by bowling Rohit around his legs, leaving India needing an increasingly improbable finish.
Kohli reached his first ODI half-century at Lord’s to keep the tourists in contention, but Sam Curran swung the contest decisively with three wickets in the space of seven deliveries. He removed Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer before Kohli miscued to Harry Brook, finishing with figures of 4-75 to extinguish India’s hopes.
India still finished on 360-7, but the target proved beyond them after England’s late acceleration with the bat.
The victory completed an impressive turnaround for Harry Brook’s side after losing the opening ODI at Edgbaston, with England responding to win the final two matches and claim a statement series success over the world’s leading ODI team.
