Over the years, he has officiated some of Africa’s biggest football competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), CAF Champions League matches, and FIFA youth tournaments.

He also made history as the first Somali referee to officiate at AFCON and a CAF Champions League final, cementing his place among Africa’s most respected referee USAs.

At just 34 years old, Omar Abdulkadir Artan was set to make history as the first Somali referee to officiate at a FIFA World Cup. However, his dream was cut short after he was denied entry into the United States upon arriving at Miami International Airport.

According to U.S. immigration authorities, Artan was found inadmissible during a routine inspection under U.S. immigration laws. Officials did not provide further details about the decision. Artan was travelling on a diplomatic passport and believed he had the correct visa and documents required to work in the United States.

Artan had travelled from Istanbul but was forced to return to Turkey after being denied entry. As a result, he will miss the World Cup despite being selected by FIFA for the tournament.

In an interview with AFP, Somalia’s Sports Ministry adviser, Ciise Aden Abshir, said he was disappointed with FIFA and felt the situation undermined the organisation’s commitment to football development and equal opportunities.

“Omar is among Africa’s most respected referees and deserves the support of the entire football community.

“Denying him entry and preventing him officiating harms not only him personally but also undermines football’s commitment to fairness, merit and the spirit of fair play.”

The FIFA World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19. The tournament will kick off at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 11, with hosts Mexico facing South Africa in the opening match. The final will take place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey.
