Liverpool legends Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah said emotional farewells to Anfield after the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Brentford on the final day of the season.
The pair ended remarkable nine-year spells at the club as Liverpool secured a fifth-place finish and qualification for next season’s Champions League. Emotions poured out after the final whistle as supporters paid tribute to two players who helped transform Liverpool back into regular trophy challengers.
Robertson said the week had been emotionally exhausting as he tried to balance preparations for the match with saying goodbye to staff, teammates and supporters.
“We had to make sure the club got back into the Champions League,” Robertson said. “The season did not go how we wanted, but at least we leave knowing Liverpool will still be competing on the biggest stage next season.”
The Scotland captain reflected proudly on how the squad changed expectations at Anfield during their successful era.
“When we arrived, winning the Premier League or Champions League felt like a dream,” he said. “Now people expect Liverpool to challenge for trophies every season, and that shows what this group achieved.”
Robertson also praised former captain Jordan Henderson, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and departing Everton defender Seamus Coleman, while also crediting Pep Guardiola for pushing Liverpool to higher standards during their rivalry with Manchester City.
Salah revealed the occasion left him overwhelmed with emotion.
“I cried a lot, probably more than in my whole life,” Salah said. “People see me as strong and aggressive, but inside I’m very emotional. It’s very tough to leave a place like this.”
The Egyptian forward said he and Robertson wanted to leave behind a message for the next generation of Liverpool players.
“The fans expect you to fight for everything,” he said. “If you give everything on the pitch, they will love you forever. That is why Robbo is loved so much here.”
Salah also praised Robertson’s contribution during Liverpool’s most successful period in recent history.
“He was always there for me and for the team,” Salah said. “I feel blessed to have shared a dressing room with him for so many years.”
Despite the sadness of leaving, Salah said the farewell from supporters confirmed their achievements would never be forgotten.
“We won everything together,” he said. “The most important thing is seeing the fans appreciate what we gave to this club.”
