Antonelli has enjoyed a sensational start to the 2026 Formula 1 season, winning three consecutive grands prix and building a 20-point championship advantage over team-mate George Russell.
The Italian also made history by becoming the first driver to take his first three victories from his first three pole positions.
Despite his impressive pace, Antonelli has continued to struggle when the lights went out. Across six standing starts this season, including Sprint races, he has lost positions on every occasion and often dropped into the midfield during the opening lap.
At the Miami Grand Prix, Antonelli started from pole but slipped to third position into Turn 1 before recovering after Max Verstappen spun ahead of him. He eventually fought back to secure victory ahead of Charles Leclerc.
Mercedes admitted after the Miami Sprint that incorrect settings contributed to Antonelli’s poor launch, although the issue was partly corrected for the main race.
Button praised the teenager’s composure and racecraft, while also pointing to the one area that could elevate him to another level.
“He’s really impressive,” Button told Sky Sports News. “The first and second wins had a bit of luck involved, which every racing driver needs, but he took advantage of it and showed great pace.
“In Miami, even after losing out at the start to Lando Norris, he recovered brilliantly. His speed at the end of the race was extremely impressive.”
Button added that Antonelli still had room to improve despite his strong form.
“He’s struggling at the starts and losing places every race. Once he fixes that, he looks like he’ll be unstoppable.”
Formula 1 now headed to the Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where Antonelli will attempt to extend his winning streak and strengthen his championship lead.
