Sporting CP battled hard in their UEFA Champions League exit to Arsenal on Wednesday night losing 1-0 on aggregate.
A goalless draw at Emirates Stadium confirmed Sporting’s elimination, with Arsenal progressing 1-0 on aggregate after a tightly contested quarter-final tie. However, Borges insisted his side deserved more from the two legs.
“I think ‘proud’ is the right word,” Borges said after the match. “For what the players did over both games, we deserved more, maybe even extra time. We created the better chances across the two matches.”
Sporting matched Arsenal throughout, limiting clear opportunities while posing a consistent threat themselves. Borges highlighted his team’s discipline and bravery against one of Europe’s strongest sides.
“In terms of strategy, the team was excellent,” he explained. “Arsenal didn’t create much in our box, not here or in Lisbon. We were strong on the ball and didn’t allow their individual quality to decide the game.”
He also pointed to Sporting’s identity, stressing that his players stayed true to their attacking philosophy.
“We like to control the ball and play offensively, and we didn’t move away from that. The character and personality the team showed was outstanding.”
Despite the disappointment of elimination, Borges made it clear there was no sense of regret in the dressing room.
“There’s no frustration, only pride,” he said. “If we want to compete with the best in Europe, we must be ready to respond every three days. That’s motivation for us going forward.”
Reflecting on their European campaign, Borges described it as a significant step in the club’s development.
“This Champions League run has been very positive,” he added. “We’ve shown the history and strength of Sporting. The club is growing, and we’ve earned respect – not just for ourselves, but for Portuguese football as well.”
