Former Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus has encouraged Jadon Sancho to seriously consider a return to Signal Iduna Park amid uncertainty over his future.
Sancho, currently on loan at Aston Villa from Manchester United, is expected to leave Old Trafford permanently when his contract expires in June. His situation has triggered fresh speculation about a third spell at Borussia Dortmund, where he previously enjoyed the most productive period of his career.
Sancho first arrived in Germany as a teenager after leaving Manchester City’s academy and quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents. Between 2017 and 2021, he scored 50 goals and registered 64 assists for Dortmund, helping the club win both the German Cup and German Super Cup.
His performances eventually earned a 73 million pound move to Manchester United in 2021, where he was expected to become a long-term attacking cornerstone.
However, Sancho has struggled to replicate his Bundesliga form in the Premier League. Across two difficult seasons at United, he failed to consistently secure a starting role and later fell out of favour, leading to a loan return to Dortmund in January 2024.
Since then, his career has remained unsettled, with temporary moves to Chelsea and Aston Villa failing to produce a significant resurgence. At Villa, he has managed just one goal and three assists in 31 appearances, further fuelling doubts over his long-term future at the top level in England.
Reports have also suggested Villa could explore a permanent move, while United are prepared to offload him for free in order to remove his high wages from their structure.
Speaking to Sport Bild, Reus stressed that Sancho’s priority should be finding a place where he feels comfortable and can rebuild confidence.
“My primary advice to Jadon is to look for a place where he feels comfortable again and can rediscover his game,” said Reus. “And if that’s at Dortmund, then it would be good for both him and Dortmund.”
Reus also reflected on their time together at Dortmund, highlighting Sancho’s intelligence and creativity in attacking situations.
“I have rarely played with a player who instinctively made such good decisions in tight situations,” he added. “He knows what the game needs and what his teammates need. He draws two or three opponents
Any potential return to Dortmund would reportedly require significant financial compromise. Sancho currently earns around 15 million euros per year at Manchester United, but Dortmund would only be prepared to offer a package closer to 5 million euros plus performance-based bonuses.
That wage gap is expected to be a key factor in any negotiations, particularly as Sancho’s priority shifts toward rebuilding his career rather than maximising earnings.
With Manchester United preparing to move him on and loan spells failing to reignite his form, Sancho faces a decisive off-season. A return to Dortmund – where he once thrived as one of Europe’s brightest young attackers – has emerged as a realistic option.
