DARK HORSES LATEST

AN PEANN DEARG Leopardstown March 2nd

There was something to like about the way AN PEANN DEARG stayed on from an unpromising position at the finish of this listed handicap chase. Taking a wide route, he had to be fired into his fences in order to get competitive and did well to finish within seven and a half lengths of the winner O’Toole. He’s one for the notebook and Paul Nolan can place him to win soon.

RED DELTA Newcastle February 21st

RED DELTA was doing his best work at the finish of this historic Eider Chase and smacks of a horse that can graduate up the weights and pay to be followed in soft ground staying chases. He has few miles on his racing clock, while his trainer Fiona Needham knows how to get the best out of a horse of his ilk. While cut in the ground is important to him he’s one that could prosper in races like the Welsh National next season, or possibly the Midlands National at Uttoxeter later in the month.

PETTY CASH Ludlow February 18th

One to take seriously for a decent bet when next on the racecourse is PETTY CASH. In this three mile handicap chase and first outing since undergoing a breathing operation he was patiently ridden while moving easily within himself. His jockey had a lot of horse under her as the gelding took closer order turning into the straight, and though a bad mistake four out took some of the wind out of his sails he survived a less severe error two out and was closing on the run in without knowing he’d been in a race. Knowing Henry Daly, he will look to bring this well handicapped horse back to his local course.

MILCREE Kelso February 13th

In making it two wins from as many starts this season MILCREE looked like a horse that can rise up the ratings before the end of the season. He hacked up over two and a half miles at Ayr in January and readily confirmed his superiority over Young Jack on this latest start for Nicky Richards. The Milan gelding spent two years recovering from a training setback but his overall record stamps him as smart. Soft or easy ground is important to him, but I shall be surprised if he doesn’t pick up a decent pot before the end of the season. He’s one to follow.
