Bayern Munich chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen insists the club will not get carried away despite leading the Bundesliga standings by 11 points.
Speaking to Sport BILD, Dreesen stressed that there is still plenty of football to be played. His comments followed Bayern’s dramatic 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker, a result that strengthened their grip on the title race.
“Vincent Kompany and Harry Kane said on Saturday after beating Dortmund 3-2 that we still have 10 games to play,” Dreesen explained. “We’ve already had an 11-point lead this season and we saw that things can go quickly with a draw or a defeat.
“But of course we don’t want to give up this lead. We’ll focus from game to game and keep the concentration up.”
It was a measured response from the 58-year-old executive, who knows from experience how quickly momentum can shift in the Bundesliga. Bayern’s recent form has been strong, but Dreesen was keen to underline that nothing has been secured yet.
He also addressed the ongoing debate around Germany’s 50+1 ownership rule, backing club president Herbert Hainer’s view that reform should be considered to maintain competitiveness.
“Herbert Hainer has reiterated our stance recently,” Dreesen said. “We’re of the opinion that every club should be able to decide for itself what to do. We need a strong and competitive Bundesliga to stay motivated and push ourselves.
“I hope our colleagues at Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart, RB Leipzig and elsewhere can also take steps and keep up with us.”
Bayern’s next match in the Bundesliga is against Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday. In the UEFA Champions League, they will next face Italian side Atalanta in the Round of 16 first leg on Tuesday, 10 March.
