Virgil van Dijk believes Dominik Szoboszlai has the attributes to become a future captain of Liverpool, praising the midfielder’s leadership and consistency.
The Hungarian international has emerged as one of Liverpool’s standout performers despite the team struggling to match their usual standards domestically. The 25-year-old has impressed with his versatility, stepping into multiple roles throughout the campaign, including deputising at right-back during injury setbacks within the squad.
Szoboszlai’s individual output has also drawn attention. He has reached 10 goals across all competitions this season while contributing seven assists in 35 appearances. His tally has already surpassed his best scoring return at Liverpool and has him closing in on the 12 goals he scored during his time with RB Salzburg in the 2019/20 season.
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah recently praised the midfielder following his latest scoring display against Brighton and Hove Albion, describing him as “one of the best players in the world right now,” further underlining his growing importance within the squad.
Van Dijk suggested Szoboszlai’s leadership credentials extend beyond his performances on the pitch, although he emphasised that any decision regarding the club captaincy would ultimately rest with head coach Arne Slot.
“That’s all on the manager I think. I don’t know. Yeah,” Van Dijk said when asked about the prospect of Szoboszlai one day inheriting the armband.
“Obviously he has been very good. Also a player who I think can still make the next step in terms of being a leader for this team.
“It starts by leading by example and that’s something he has done so far this season.
“But also everything around it; there is still progress to be made and that’s a good thing in my opinion so hopefully he will be very important for the years to come at Liverpool.”
