In an interview on The Today Show, TV presenter Savannah Guthrie asked the 23-time grand slam champion if she is returning to tennis after there was speculation in December that she had re-entered the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) registered testing pool, which all players must be signed up to for at least six months before playing competitively.

“I mean, really, are you asking this on the Today Show? Oh, my goodness.

“Is that a no? I’m just having fun and enjoying my life right now. That’s not a yes or no. I don’t know. I’m just gonna see what happens. That’s not a ‘maybe’.

“I have two kids. I’m a full-time stay-at-home. When I filled out a form the other day. Occupation? Housewife.”

Unsatisfied with the response, Guthrie pressed further, asking whether Williams had re-entered the drug-testing pool. Williams replied, “Did I re-enter? I don’t know if I was ever out. Listen, I can’t discuss this.

“I want to go to bed, it’s early”.

Williams has not played competitive tennis since 2022 at the US Open. Her sister Venus Williams recently got back to competitive tennis after taking a break for 16 months. She returned to action at the WTA 500 Tournament in the United States in July 2025.

Venus recently participated in the Australian Open but got knocked out of the first round by Olga Danilovic 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 at Melbourne Park. Although she lost, she set a record as the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open singles main draw.
