Paris Saint-Germain’s newest signing Dro Fernandez was on the training pitch this week, can’t play in Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Newcastle United.
PSG have completed the signing of teenage midfielder Dro Fernandez from Barcelona for a fee of around seven million pounds. The 18-year-old has agreed a four-and-a-half-year contract in Paris, running until 2030, and will wear the number 27 shirt.
Fernandez broke into Barcelona’s first team earlier this season, making five appearances across all competitions. He also featured in the Champions League and registered an assist during Barcelona’s 6-1 win over Olympiacos in October, marking him out as one of the club’s brightest young prospects.
Despite being spotted in PSG training ahead of the Newcastle game, Fernandez is ineligible to feature. While UEFA rules allow players to represent more than one club in the same Champions League season, PSG have already submitted their squad list for the league phase. The deadline to make changes has passed, which blocks January signings from playing until the knockout rounds.
PSG have already secured qualification for the knockout stage. A win against Newcastle would all but confirm a place in the last 16, while victory for the Premier League side would send them through directly and likely force PSG into the knockout round play-offs.
Looking ahead, Fernandez could be registered for the knockout matches on PSG’s List A squad. UEFA rules allow clubs to add up to three new players for the knockout rounds, provided registration is completed by early February.
PSG have been boosted elsewhere, with Achraf Hakimi returning to training after a long absence. Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz were also back on the pitch as the French champions prepare for a decisive European night.
