Vincent Kompany says attacking freedom is behind Bayern Munich’s remarkable goalscoring record this season offering strong evidence that his approach is working
The Bayern head coach has made it clear he will not restrict his players’ creativity, arguing that the club’s most technically gifted attackers must be trusted to decide matches.
“That’s what it’s all about for me at every moment,” Kompany said. “I want our technically strongest players to have the ball, the four or five up front leading the line. These are the guys who make the difference.”
Kompany explained that his focus is on creating space and options rather than controlling decisions in the final third.
“How do we give them three or four options? A dribble, a one-two, a cross. If they have the choice, we’ve done a good job. Then they can show what only they can do.”
That philosophy has been backed by the numbers. Bayern have scored a total of 92 goals across all competitions in the 2025–26 season, averaging 3.68 goals per game. In the Bundesliga alone, they have hit 71 goals in 18 matches, an average of 3.9 per game, with Harry Kane leading the way on 21 league goals.
In the Champions League, Bayern have scored 18 goals in six matches, again with Kane as the top scorer on five goals. They have also added three goals in the DFB-Pokal. Kane has 32 goals across all competitions, underlining Bayern’s firepower.
The attacking mindset has already produced major milestones. Bayern have set a new Bundesliga record for most goals scored after the first 18 league matches and are currently the top-scoring team in the division. In Europe, they rank as the third-highest scoring side so far in the Champions League.
Their biggest statement came in January 2026 with an emphatic 8-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg, a match that perfectly summed up Kompany’s attacking philosophy.
Bayern now turn their attention to their next Champions League league-stage match against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise at the Allianz Arena, with Kompany expected to stick to the same principles. For the Bayern boss, the message remains clear: structure supports talent, but freedom brings goals.
